Biography
Generally hated/admired for her uncanny ability to
tune a guitar, by ear, in mere seconds, Cheryl
Beatty writes a lot of songs about the trivialities
of love.
She also hates the fact that she writes so much
about the trivialities of love, but occasionally
also writes songs about the great Canadian North,
lying in sunbeams, train rides, ships at sea,
swimming underwater, coming home, leaving home,
moving to the city, Ferris wheels, early mornings
lying in bed listening to the rain, snow falling
under street lamps, driving on long stretches of
open highway on summer nights with the windows wide
open, and breathing in the sweet fragrant air of her
favourite places in the world.
She is a 70’s child, born to two very normal and
loving people who often stared at her strangely
because they just didn’t understand where her
flourishing creativity came from. They finally gave
in to the inevitability of her musical genius and
presented her with an electric organ for Christmas
when she was 9. From that moment on, all hope was
lost for peace and quiet in the Beatty household.
Cheryl grew up listening to a lot of really bad
music. Listening to Kenny Rogers’ “Lady” still
causes her to shudder uncontrollably.
At 14, she suddenly realized she didn’t have to
listen to dreadful music anymore, and coincidentally
was at that same age when she picked up her first
guitar and started teaching herself how to play it.
She started writing songs almost immediately. Cheryl
naturally had many images to draw from for
songwriting from growing up in the visually rich
countryside of rural Ontario, and she still draws
inspiration from those images to this day.
Cheryl sang in church choirs, in school productions,
in front of house guests, and herself to sleep at
night when she was just a wee lass. At 16, she
debuted her own music, a la guitar, for an audience
of 800 students at an annual high school assembly.
Subsequently, she became a regular performer in the
musically rich Peterborough scene, appearing at The
Peterborough Folk Festival, First Night New Year’s
Celebration Peterborough, The Free For All
Independent Music Festival and the Dionysus Festival
at Trent University.
In April of 2004, Cheryl moved to Toronto and is now
part of a larger, more diverse musical scene. She
has performed onstage at the Cameron House, the Only
Café, Holy Joe’s, and Cervejaria. She can also be
seen regularly at the Free Times Café, the
Renaissance Café and the Smiling Buddha. Her smart
lyrics and soaring voice have earned her a loyal fan
base, and her appearances at Toronto’s Indie Week
2004 and Winter Folk 2005 were met with much
enthusiasm.
So what’s next for our musical heroine?
Cheryl is currently in-the-works on a small
collection of great songs that you can expect to be
released very soon!
