Biography
Toronto born
guitarist Dave Friedman began playing at the age of
ten. His earliest influences were rock guitar
players. He took formal lessons at a local music
school where he learned note reading and rudimentary
theory. In the early 1980’s Dave began lifting
tunes from recordings of numerous rock guitar
players, which helped to develop his ear training
and technique.
In 1982/83 Dave
studied jazz and classical guitar with Rob Campbell
at the prestigious Eli Kassner Guitar Academy in
Toronto. Here Dave learned theory, chord/scale
progressions, repertoire, and developed his jazz and
classical technique.
From 1984 to
1989 Dave studied theory, jazz harmony, and
repertoire
with renowned jazz
guitarist/composer Gary Benson (Canadian Jazz
Quartet).
From 1988 to
1992 Dave studied classical harmony, analysis,
counterpoint and history at the Royal Conservatory
of Music, and in 1991/92 he
studied classical guitar with Robert Hamilton also
at the R.C.M.
During the mid
1980’s Dave played in rock bands performing in
venues throughout Ontario, Quebec and Canada’s
east coast. He also performed studio guitar work for
singer/songwriter Ron LaSalle and songwriter Steve
Davey. Dave’s guitar work has received radio play
on FM stations throughout Ontario including Q107 in
Toronto and The Wolf FM in Peterborough. Dave has
also performed solo guitar and guitar with vocal
accompaniment.
Dave taught
guitar, bass, banjo, and theory at Scarboro Music in
Toronto from 1988 to 1995. He also taught group
guitar and banjo programs for the City of
Scarborough, 1992 - 1995, and The Municipality of
Clarington, 2001- 2003.
Dave has taught
guitar, bass, banjo and theory from his home studio
since 1989.
Recently Dave
has focused on performing solo fingerstyle jazz/pop
standards and original compositions. “My goal is
to continue improvising by exploring and expanding
on all of my musical ideas.”
Dave lives in
Bowmanville, Ont. with his wife and three children.
He continues to perform, write, record and teach
music.
