Biography
Dear Interested Reader,
Allow me to introduce myself.
My name is Matthew Crowley and I am the singer/guitarist/songwriter for the Peterborough, Ontario rock group “The Scene”. As the front man, the task has fallen to me to explain to you the nature of this band - the “biography” if you will.
Our Background:
I will start by saying yes there is, more than likely, quite a few bands out there with the name “The Scene”. I realize it is not a frightfully original moniker as band names go, but seeing as we are heavily influenced by British bands (most of which have a
"The" at the start of their name), we felt it captures what we are all about. We decided to name ourselves after a line in the Stone Roses song “Made of Stone”. Iain Brown sings
'I love the scene', and we thought 'Well, if it’s good enough for him and John Squire, it’s good enough for us'.
We have been through various stages of personnel and band names over the past few years, finally settling on the current lineup in 2003. The other two members of The Scene are Mark Chamberlain (bass guitar) and Jeff Gutteridge (drums). Mark doubles as both the bassist and hairdresser in the band (cutting my shaggy mane regularly!), and Jeff doubles as our recording engineer/producer with his home studio in his basement. We have released one EP, called simply the “Orange EP” (named so because of the giant orange that emblazons the cover and the CD itself).
Our Live Experience:
We have played venues all across Ontario and once at CBGB’s in New York September of 2004 (as the opening act). We have also been a part of various festivals in Canada (played in NXNE twice as
'Gifthorse' and 'Standard') and even played the 'In The City
Festival' in Manchester, England.
By this point you may be thinking “So what! What do you sound like?”
The nerve...
Our Sound:
Well, I’m not going to pull the “it’s hard to compare us to anything out there because we’re so different” line that most bands tend to say because really only one band in a million actually have something that you have never heard before. I feel that we combine styles that you have indeed heard before, or may have heard late one night on the radio, but we like to think we’re doing it a little better.
Let me put it this way.
Were elements of The Verve and Ride ever to form a band and covered Oasis songs, you’d have a pretty good idea of our sound. I'm a little biased in saying this, but most of our songs have really great melodies in them that get stuck in your head and won’t get out. For that, I am sorry. I know what it’s like to have a song in your head and have it occupy your every thought for the entire day (I lost a year of my life to Pink's.
'Don't Let Me Get Me'.
Our songs combine the best elements of Canadian and British rock; some are powerful with lots of effects (such as
'Don't Wait Too Long') and great massive drum beats, other are stripped down, personal, and quiet (Like the ballad
'The Shape of Things To Come').
You may now be thinking what do we look like?
Our Look:
Don’t ask. For the love of God, don't ask. I mean, you can look at the pictures if you want, but trust me you’re better off hearing our music. We're no O-Town (whoever they are)!
